Hi Dirk,

Here Martin from Austria! First I want to thank you for introducing to this great site! It's awesome to have contact with his drummer-idol :-)
I really like the combination between your groove and speed drumming!

I have a question about your interesting foot-technique:

On the Soilwork concert in Vienna I noticed, that you use the "Swivel" technique (side-to-side). How long did it take you to learn this great "technique" and how did you practice it? Many drummers say, that the side-to-side motion happens automatically. Is this right?

Greets from Austria!

Hey Martin,

Glad to hear you enjoy Drumhall! And thank you for the kind compliments!

The swivel technique came naturally indeed. I started noticing my left foot swiveling after watching Pete Sandoval play live. Before that I didn't even realize it was happening.

I've been trying to learn it with my right foot recently, and it seems that certain muscles just aren't up to par yet because it's quite tough!

To practice the swivel, I find a tempo where I can kind of pull off the movement, and then alternate between left foot/left hand and right foot/right hand rolls. It may take a few months of daily practicing but eventually you'll get there. Just be patient and work hard!

I feel that the swivel technique does make it easier to play fast, so I do recommend trying it out.

Cheers Martin and thanks for your interest!
/Dirk
