Isolation Headphones!

Hey Dirk!

I love your drumming on Blind Eye Halo. It's so entertaining to watch you play that song with that weird blast beat, groove thing you have going, FLIPPIN' EPIC!

Any way i have the Ozzfest 2005 dvd and i noticed you're wearing headphones whilst you play.

I was just wondering as to what model of isolation headphones you use.

Because i myself, bought a pair of the Direct Sound, Isolation Headphones. I intended to use them with my MP3 player, and play my acoustic drums to my fave jams. Though i had to crank up the MP3 player so loudly that i wasn't sure whether or not it was worth it?

They isolated and made the drums much more quieter, though I'm not to sure as to whether or not the MP3 level was at a safe volume.

So what brand/model do you use, and can you tell me about the isolation these headphones achieve, i.e can you hear everything at a clear volume, do you have to crank up the backing track heaps etc.

I NEED AS MUCH INSIGHT AS POSSIBLE TO THIS SUBJECT FROM A PRO, HELP!!

Thank you so much for reading such a detailed question.

All the best

And thanks again!

Hey there,

First off, thanks for your compliments regarding that silly Blind Eye Halo tune- very nice to hear!

The isolation headphones you saw in the Ozzfest DVD are a no-brand model that is often used by construction workers. They can be found quite easily for about $3 a pair and they reduce noise by up to 35 dB.

Underneath those headphones, I also wear Shure SCL5 in-ear monitors, whose buds I replace with polyurethane ear plugs which take away another 25-30 dB. Yep, I use a lot of sound protection... But that's mainly because I've got mild tenitis which I would prefer to keep mild, if you know what I mean.

Such a level of sound isolation may take some getting used to, but the above solution will allow you to keep the volume on your mp3 player pretty low. And if you can't afford Shure in-ears (which are pretty expensive), I would suggest trying a combo of polyurethane earplugs and a good set of closed headphones. My favorites are the Beyer Dynamics DT770 Pro, not so cheap either, but well worth the price... Several of my friends have purchased a pair after trying mine. You'll have to crank up the music a little more though, since that type of headphones doesn't isolate quite as much.

Good luck!
/Dirk
